If the Birkenstock Boston Clogs look familiar to you, that’s probably because the style has been around since 1979, and it was extremely popular in the ‘90s and early 2000s. Now, the Birkenstock clogs are making a comeback thanks to their comfy fit and versatility. The cushioned footbed is designed to make you feel like you’re standing in sand, making them comfortable enough for everyday wear, while the neutral suede upper will go with 90% of your fall wardrobe.

EXCLUSIVE: AKQA Names Tesa Aragones First President Of Agency’s North America Operations

Business

Tesa Aragones

AKQA Announces Tesa Aragones As President of North American Operations

Jenny Risher

Most Recently CMO of Discord, Aragones Brings Client and Agency Experience To The Role.

Leadership changes at agencies happen these days with a regularity that would make a newborn’s parents proud. But typically, these shifts involve talent moving from one agency to another. Far less common—and more interesting—is when someone from the client side becomes an agency head.

Such is the case today as AKQA, a design and innovation company and part of WPP, announces that Tesa Aragones, most recently the CMO of Discord, has been appointed to the newly created position of President of its North America business.

It’s a reunion of sorts for her, the agency and AKQA’s CEO and founder, Ajaz Ahmed, because Aragones was a client of the agency three times during her marketing tenures at Nike, VSCO, and Discord, respectively. But for her, the move represents another return—to the agency side of the marketing business. Earlier in Aragones’s career, she spent time at both the once-legendary (and now-lost-to-consolidation) ad agency DMB&B, and creative agency David & Goliath, where she was a Managing Partner.

Having moved back and forth between the client and agency sides five times in my own career, and often wondered why we don’t see more cross-pollination between these two parts of the marketing whole. After all, who better knows the nuances of client challenges than, well, someone who’s been a client? And who better knows what makes a good—let alone great—client than someone from the agency side?

Of course, it’s not always an easy transition—as the differences in scope, authority, and accountability vary wildly. But, to Aragones, however, it’s exactly this that defines the value she brings to the agency on day one.

“Because I’ve been on both sides, I bring a perspective from both sides,” says Aragones, who has no fewer than twelve patents for her work (all signed over to their respective clients, for the record) and has long been considered an innovator. “I know how important it is for each to think about what we’re doing together. One team with a shared mission — this is where collaboration and imagination happen.”

As for Ahmed, he believes Aragones’s background will be key to the next phase of AKQA’s success. I asked him what this hiring—again, a new position for the agency—suggests about how he looked at the future of the agency specifically and the agency business more generally; and about how her hiring would accelerate progress towards this vision. For him, building the next chapter in the agency’s future “requires a shift in structure” and he thinks Aragones’s “combination of agency, client and brand experience adds value to the experiences our clients and their audiences will have. It’s about differentiating AKQA and amplifying our foundational values in new generational leaders, in a world of (agency) new players.”

These foundational values include a mission “to create a better future”; implicit (and explicit) in that better future is a commitment to diversity, reflected throughout the org from Ahmed himself down. Aragones, a first-generation American, considers this fundamental to AKQA’s culture and success. “It forces you to “see life in different ways—which informs innovation and different ways of getting to solutions, building relationships and trust.”

Today’s CMOs and client-side marketers are challenged like at no other time in marketing’s history. Which, of course, creates new challenges for the ecosystem of agencies that support and partner with them. “A lot has changed,” agrees Aragones. “And any time there’s a shift, there’s an opportunity to imagine how things can be better. To try and find solutions, solve problems, and push the world, the work—and the next generation—forward.”

Billionaire Power Couple Steps Down From Leadership At Soho China

Soho China, one of China’s largest and best-known real estate developers, said today co-founding billionaire couple Pan Shiyi and Zhang Xin have stepped down from their leadership roles as chairman and CEO “in order to focus on supporting the arts and philanthropic pursuits.”

Soho said Huang Jingsheng, an independent non-executive director, had been appointed as non-executive chairman effective today, replacing Pan. Xu Jin and Qian Ting, long-time executives, would become co-CEOs, succeeding Zhang.

The moves come after U.S. investment firm Blackstone Group offered to buy a majority of the Beijing-headquartered company in a transaction worth $3 billion last year. The purchase later fizzled on “a lack of progress.”

Blackstone had offered HK$5 a share; Soho China closed at HK$1.36 yesterday. Shares shot up by nearly 10% today at the Hong Kong Stock Exchange after the new leaders were announced.

Pan and Zhang, who own nearly 64% of the company, will remain on the board as executive directors.

The high-profile changes at Soho China come as China faces slowing economic growth in connection with the Covid-19 pandemic and heightened geopolitical tension with the United States under current Communist Party leader Xi Jinping. China’s real estate industry also faces years of stress following overbuilding and debt that have cut heavily into the fortunes of the country’s richest property developers.

Xi, who is seen as seeking a third term as the party’s most powerful figure this year, has promoted “common prosperity” in a push to narrow an income gap between rich and poor in the world’s most populous nation. China, currently the world’s No. 2 economy, is home to the world’s second-largest number of billionaires after the United States.

Founded in 1995, Soho China as of last year owned approximately 1.3 million square meters of real estate, largely in Shanghai and Beijing. Distinctive projects with architect Zaha Hadid, who died in 2016, helped to put the couple on the global real estate map.

Pan and Zhang are worth a combined $2.8 billion on the Forbes Real-Time Billionaires List today.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Home Theater Projectors That Turn Any Wall Into A Cinema

Billionaires

Want a bigger picture than it’s practical to get from a flat-screen TV? Or perhaps you want your home theater experience to be more portable? Even with the presence of truly enormous TVs, home theater projectors remain a great choice for making the small screen a lot larger. The best home theater projectors let you show TV shows, movies and games in vivid color and larger-than-life detail—anywhere you can beam content onto a screen or blank wall.

Optoma UHD35 True 4K UHD Gaming Projector
Beam games, TV shows or movies onto a wall or screen using a projector.

Optoma

Home theater projectors use a lamp to project your source video. Typically, projectors have a maximum image size they can produce—and a maximum lamp brightness—which is important becuase most projectors require you to black out your windows or not watch in daylight.

Our current top pick—the Hisense PX1 Pro—is also a short throw projector—which means you can position the projector close to a projection surface and still achieve a large image (usually, image size is correlated with how far the projector sits from the projection surface). Here are more of the best home theater projectors—and some are even great for gaming.

Best Home Theater Projector Overall

Impressive Features At A Fair Price

Hisense PX1-PRO
Best Buy

Hisense PX1-PRO

Resolution: 4K  |  Lamp life: 25,000 hours | Brightness: 2,200 lumens | Connectivity: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi | Inputs: USB, HDMI, Coaxial video, ethernet | Built-in speakers: Stereo | Projection size: 90 to 130 inches

Best for: Transforming just about any room into a home theater.

Using a triple-laser light engine, the Hisense PX1-PRO produces sharp pictures in 4K resolution. This short throw projector has a throw ratio of 0.25, which means you can get as close as 0.9 feet; and it generates images between 90 and 130 inches, making it a great choice for movie night with family and friends. The PX10-PRO caught our attention not just for its placement versatility, but also for its image quality. It achieves 2,200 lumens brightness with a triple-laser light engine which produces 107% of the BT.2020 color space. Together with its HDR robust support, the PX10-PRO outputs images are rich and color accurate. Its built-in 30W stereo speakers use Dolby Atmos, while the projector’s HDMI eARC port handles lossless audio playback. This projector is a full-fledged entertainment system with its integrated Android TV 10 and TV tuner, thought its variant of Android TV lacks Netflix (you can connect one of the best streaming devices to stream Netflix or other video services) and it has no support for 3D content. For gamers, auto low-latency mode can be a boon, as well.

Pros:

  • Rich, accurate colors
  • Integrated Android TV
  • Support for Dolby Atmos audio

Cons:

  • No 3D support
  • No internal Netflix app

Best 4K Home Theater Projector

High-End Viewing And Immersive Audio

Samsung The Premier LSP9T
Samsung

Samsung The Premier LSP9T

Resolution: 4K |  Lamp life: 20,000 hours | Brightness: 2,800 lumens  | Connectivity: Wi-Fi | Inputs: USB, HDMI, ethernet | Built-in speakers: 4.2-channel dual speakers | Projection size: Up to 130 inches

Best for: Building out a high-end home theater in your living space.

Samsung’s high-end home theater project uses a triple-laser light engine to produce bright, 2,800 lumen images. It is a short-throw projector which can images up to 130-inches from about three feet from the projection surface; it has a 0.189 throw ratio. The Premier supports HDR and HDR10+ for displaying realistic, clear and vibrant colors. The built-in dual-40 watt speakers output Dolby Audio and uses Samsung’s Acoustic Beam audio technology to produce 4.2-channel sound. The unit itself has a compact design which doesn’t make it look like just another projector; instead, its stylish contours fit in well with a living environment.

Thanks to its built-in smart video streaming capabilities (using Samsung’s Tizen OS), the projector can directly access Netflix, Apple TV+, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and other popular services without needing additional equipment. If you do choose to add a dedicated streamer or other connection, the back of the projector has three HDMI ports, an ethernet port and a USB port. Gamers should note the Game Enhancer mode can automatically reduce input lag, for smoother and more responsive gameplay against opponents. Best Buy

Optoma UHD35

Resolution: 4K  |  Lamp life: 15,000 hours | Brightness: 3,600 lumens | Connectivity: None | Inputs: HDMI, VGA | Built-in speaker: Yes | Projection size: 33 to 300 inches

Best for: Gaming and movies

In addition to 4K resolution and 3,600 lumens brightness, the Optoma UHD35 stands out for gaming thanks to its fast 240Hz refresh rate and 4.2 millisecond response time via its enhanced gaming mode. This translates to low input lag and smooth, responsive gameplay. It also supports HDR10 and HLG .

Position the projector between four and 32 feet from a wall or screen to output a picture between 33 and 300 inches—a maximum that makes this a good choice for use in big rooms and small alike. Its integrated audio is meager, though, with just one 10 watt speaker integrated into the projector. Your favorite games, however, will appear more immersive and larger than life. This model is old school, though, with no Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

Pros:

  • Decent brightness for at home use
  • Great response time and refresh rate for gamers
  • Flexible projection size

Cons:

  • Mono speaker
  • Lacks Bluetooth and Wi-Fi

Anker NEBULA Cosmos Laser 4K Projector
Amazon

Anker Nebula Cosmos Laser 4K Projector

Resolution: 4K |  Lamp life: 25,000 hours | Brightness: 2,400 lumens  | Connectivity: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Chromecast  | Inputs: HDMI, USB | Built-in speakers: Stereo speakers | Projection size: Up to 150 inches

Best for: Watching your favorite movies indoors or outdoors.

The Anker Nebula Cosmos Laser 4K projector makes it easy to connect your computer or mobile device so you can stream and project just about any video content at up to 4K resolution. At 2400 lumens, this projector is bright, making it good for use outdoors or in ambient light; and images look rich thanks to HDR support.

It has a built-in handle to help carry it around, useful since it weighs a hefty 10.5 pounds. If you’re setting it up outside, though, you need a power source since this model lacks a battery. The Nebula projects 4K images between 60 and 150 inches, and has a throw ratio of 1.27—which means you can’t get too close to the projection surface. Meanwhile, the projector supports Dolby audio and 3D Soundscape on its two 10-watt speakers for impressive sound. It runs using Android TV 10, which means you can stream a variety of popular services without needing a separate streaming device.

Pros:

  • 4K resolution with HDR 10 support
  • Integrated Android TV 10 for streaming
  • Strong built-in speakers

Cons:

  • Not battery powered

Best Ultra Short Throw 4K Projector

When You’re Super Tight On Space

LG CineBeam HU715QW
Amazon

LG CineBeam HU715QW

Resolution: 4K | Lamp life: 20,000 hours | Brightness: 2,500 lumens  | Connectivity: Bluetooth, Apple AirPlay, Wi-Fi | Inputs: HDMI, USB | Built-in speakers: Stereo speakers | Projection size: 80 to 120 inches

Best for: A small space you want to convert into an impressive home theater.

Put the stylish LG CineBeam HU715QW less than 5 inches from a projection surface, and get an vibrant 80-inch image thanks to its 0.22:1 throw ratio. The projection image size maxes out at 120 inches, making it appropriate for a wide range of spaces. This model uses a single laser to project a bright, 2,500 lumen image with a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, but it doesn’t achieve as wide of a color gamut as three laser models.

It has two 20W speakers to produce good stereo sound, and a range of inputs—including HDMI with eARC and HDMI 2.1 for use with the latest game consoles like the Sony PlayStation 5. The CineBeam integrates HDR10 and HLG HDR protocols, as well as an HDR gaming mode which supports the guidelines set out by the HDR Gaming Interest Group. LG uses its ThinQ operating system to provide ample streaming apps and works with Apple AirPlay wireless.

Pros:

  • Great resolution, lamp life and brightness
  • Terrific streaming options
  • Ultra-short throw 0.22:1

Cons:

  • Designed to be stationary

Samsung The Freestyle

Resolution: 1080p | Lamp life: 20,000 hours | Brightness: 550 lumens  | Connectivity: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi | Inputs: HDMI, USB | Built-in speakers: 360-degree | Projection size: 30 to 100 inches

Best for: Taking it with you, indoors or out

The 1.8-pound Samsung Freestyle projector is noteworthy for its cylindrical design. Pivot the cylinder up to 180-degrees and aim it at a wall, ceiling or screen to view streamed content from your device via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Based on where you position the projector, the Freestyle automatically adjusts the screen size (between 30 and 100 inches) to produce a crisp and vivid picture. It projects images at 1080p resolution and 550 lumens brightness (a lower brightness than most competitors).

The Freestyle’s 360-degree speaker supports Dolby Digital Plus audio, to provide impressive omnidirectional audio. It runs on Samsung’s Tizen OS for streaming apps, and it supports Microsoft 365 and both Samsung Bixby and Amazon Alexa voice assistants. This ultra-portable unit can run on a USB-C power bank, or you can use an optional battery base ($190) so you use this projector almost anywhere, be it your bedroom or your backyard.

Pros:

  • Amazon Alexa and Samsung Bixby voice assitants
  • Lightweight and portable
  • 360-degree omnidirectional sound

Cons:

  • 1080p resolution
  • Low brightness level

Best Mini Projector

A Cube That Outputs 1080p

Epson EpiqVision Mini EF12
Amazon

Epson EpiqVision Mini EF12

Resolution: 1080p  |  Lamp life: 20,000 hours | Brightness: 1,000 lumens | Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Chromecast | Inputs: USB, HDMI | Built-in speakers: Stereo| Projection size: 30 to 150 inches

If you need a mini projector that looks good, gives a high-quality picture, and is extremely portable, the Epson EpiqVision EF12 is one of the best projectors around. It has a modest 1,000 lumen brightness, but works well enough in ambient light. This projector runs on Android TV for integrated streaming apps and access to Google Play Store. It can handle 4K input, but its native output resolution is 1080p.

The sound is deceptively good for such a small unit, with its dual-onboard Yamaha speaker system delivering punchy audio you’d expect out of a decent Bluetooth speaker. Plus, it supports 3.5mm audio output, and HDMI ARC. Shaped in a near-cube design, this 4.7 pound projector is small enough to carry around as needed.

Pros:

  • Compact design
  • Good audio for small form
  • Integrated Android TV

Cons:

  • Low brightness

Honorable Mention: Set Up This Projector Almost Anywhere

Anker NEBULA Capsule II Smart Portable Projector
Amazon

Anker Nebula Capsule II Smart Portable Projector

Resolution: 720p  |  Lamp life: 30,000 hours | Brightness: 200 lumens | Connectivity: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Chromecast | Inputs: USB, HDMI | Built-in speakers: One | Projection size: Up to 100 inches

Best for: Quick movie nights in dark locations like a bedroom or backyard.

Weighing just 26.1 ounces, the Anker Nebula Capsule II portable projector can be set up wherever you’d like thanks to its integrated 9,700mAh battery. Video resolution is just 720p, images look reasonable at a distance. This tiny projector’s brightness is limited to just 200 lumens—making it a good choice for use in dark rooms or outdoors. The built-in speaker is 8W, but if you want more oomph you need to connect a speaker via Bluetooth.

The Nebula Capsule II uses the Android TV 9 operating system, for streaming and Google Play Store access to install streaming apps for just about any popular service (Netflix requires a few extra hoops). Or, cast content to the projector from your smartphone, tablet or computer using Chromecast. The built-in rechargeable battery allows for up to 2.5 hours of projection time—enough to get through most movies, but too little for longer films, like any of the original The Lord of the Rings movies.

Pros:

  • Android TV 9 with direct access to Google Play Store
  • 2.5 hour battery life
  • Very portable and quick to set up

Cons:

  • Just 720p resolution
  • Low 200 lumens brightness

Best Budget Ultraportable Projector

Batteries Included

ViewSonic M1 Mini+ Ultra Portable LED Projector
Amazon

ViewSonic M1 Mini LED Projector

Resolution: WVGA (854 x 480p) |  Lamp life: 30,000 hours | Brightness: 120 lumens | Connectivity: Wi-Fi | Inputs: HDMI, USB | Built-in speakers: Stereo speakers | Projection size: 40 to 80 inches

Best for: Low-cost, battery powered projector for use with movies or work.

Weighing in at just 0.6 pounds, the ViewSonic M1 Mini LED projector is a low cost, ultra-portable unit you can take anywhere to wirelessly stream content. It has two built-in JBL speakers for stereo sound. To achieve its small size and low price, this projector is lacking in resolution and brightness. You only get WVGA-quality output, meaning no high-definition video playback. And at just 120 lumens, the lamp brightness is best suited for dark environments only. Another consideration: The rechargeable battery only lasts about two-and-a-half hours (in Eco mode) or 90 minutes in regular mode, so its utility is limited. You can, however, plug the projector into an external power source, such as a power bank.

Even with its limitations, the ViewSonic M1 is among the smallest ultra portables around. With a throw ratio of 1.2, it has a projection size of 40 inches when positioned 3.6 feet away from a wall or screen. When the projector and wall are about seven feet apart, projection size increases to 80 inches.

Pros:

  • Lightweight and portable
  • Very inexpensive
  • Easy and quick setup

Cons:

  • Low video resolution
  • Short battery life
  • Low lamp brightness

What To Consider When Buying A Projector

Regardless of how you plan to use a projector, you should consider certain features before making a purchase. Let’s explore those features and how each impacts your TV or movie watching experience.

Best Home Theater Projectors for 2022
Within a home, Samsung’s The Freestyle is a versatile and affordable projector option.

Samsung

Resolution

Consider your source content to determine what resolution projector you want. Broadcast TV channels, like ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX display programming in 1080p resolution, while streaming networks broadcast in up to 4K resolution. When choosing a projector, the higher the resolution the better, especially if you plan to watch movies. If you can afford the extra cost, you’re better off with a 4K resolution projector. When you see a really low cost projector (one priced less than $200), beware: Typically such models are 1080p resolution or less.

Projection Size

The projection size refers to how large of an image the projector can display. Projection size is measured diagonally, so when you see a maximum 150 inch projection size advertised, this is the measurement between the lower-left and upper-right corner of what’s being projected. The diagonal measurement is the same as we see in televisions and monitors, both of which are also measured in the same way.

Projection size will vary based on the distance the projector is from the wall or screen. In some cases, the projector itself has a projection size adjustment you can set manually to accommodate where you’re using the projector, without having to worry too much about its distance from the wall or screen. For this, you want to seek out a projector offering a short or ultra-short throw distance.

Throw Distance

This is the amount of space between the tip of the projector’s lens and the wall or screen that’s used to display the projector’s maximum projection size. You need to know a projector’s throw distance in order to set it up at the appropriate distance from the projection surface. This is particularly important if the projector will be mounted on a wall or ceiling, for example.

A long throw projector is designed to be placed in the center or opposite end of a room from the wall or screen it’ll be projecting onto, while a short throw projector can be placed between three and eight feet from the wall or screen. An ultra-short throw projector can be positioned less than four feet from the projection surface.

Lamp Life

All projectors use a replaceable lamp. The lamp life is the average number of hours the projector can be used before the lamp needs to be replaced. A projector with a lamp life over 25,000 hours will serve you well and be affordable to maintain over time.

Brightness

Virtually all projectors can clearly display content in a dark room. The brightness of a projector is measured in lumens. The more lumens the better, because this means the projector can display a brighter image—even in bright ambient light. For typical mixed-use environments, look for a minimum of 1,500 lumens brightness. In an office or classroom setting, go with 2,500 lumens or brighter.

If you’re creating a higher-end home theater setup within your home, look for a projector with 3,000 to 4,000 lumens brightness.

Connectivity Options

What you plan to connect to the projector will determine what connectivity options you want or need. For example, if you plan to stream content from your Apple device, look for Apple AirPlay wireless compatibility. Android devices can stream content to a protector wirelessly if it supports Chromecast. Or, you can connect your computer, game system or other gear using an HDMI or USB cable, or using Wi-Fi. While most projectors offer a selection of wired and wireless connectivity options, make sure those options are compatible with the other equipment you want to use.

Ethereum Miners Eye Cloud, AI To Repurpose Equipment That The Merge Will Make Obsolete

Forbes Digital Assets

Crypto miners are turning to cloud computing and artificial intelligence as Ethereum begins the so-called Merge without incident.

The blockchain’s switch to a proof-of-work model from proof-of-stake will make it much more energy efficient, an important catalyst for the struggling crypto industry but one that will leave the miners who validated transactions and created new coins holding a lot of specialized computer gear that will no longer be useful in creating the No. 2 cryptocurrency.

HIVE Blockchain (Nasdaq: HIVE) said Tuesday it has a pilot project for testing a portion of its mining equipment in cloud computing at a Tier 3 data center. Such centers have multiple sources of power and cooling systems and do not require a total shutdown during maintenance or equipment replacement.

The Vancouver, Canada-based company has been using a range of Nvidia’s flagship graphic processing units (GPUs) to mine ether, Ethereum’s native cryptocurrency, but these GPUs, capable of supporting large data sets, can also be used for purposes including AI acceleration and virtual simulations, according to Nvidia. HIVE said it does not own Nvidia’s special-purpose CMP GPUs, which are limited to cryptocurrency mining. The miner said it produced 3,010 ETH in August, worth nearly $5 million, but sold its holdings of the currency to fund the expansion of its bitcoin mining operations.

Similarly, another Canadian crypto miner, Hut 8 Mining (Nasdaq: HUT), announced that in late August it had installed 180 NVIDIA GPUs in its data center in Kelowna, British Columbia to repurpose these machines for providing “artificial intelligence, machine learning, or VFX rendering services to customers” on demand.

Falling profits against the backdrop of plummeting crypto prices put publicly traded miners like HIVE and Hut 8 in a squeeze, pushing their shares down by more than 60% this year.

HIVE_2022-09-06_17-33-43
Stocks of publicly traded crypto miners have taken a big hit this year

TradingView

The miners have also been beset by the lack of post-Merge alternatives. According to crypto intelligence firm Messari, Ethereum miners generated nearly $19 billion in revenue in 2021. To replace the lost revenue, some companies, including HIVE, said they would consider mining alternative proof-of-work coins such as Ethereum Classic, however, the market capitalization of these cryptocurrencies is less than 5% of Ethereum’s $194 billion.

The likely outcome of a successful Merge is that GPUs will flood the resale market as alternative proof-of-work coins will only remain profitable for a small number of miners with access to cheap energy, writes Messari analyst Sami Kassab. “Miners willing to invest the time and additional capital will be able to transition into high-performance data centers or node operators/providers for Web3 compute protocols — both rapidly growing markets.”

Irish Data Watchdog Fines Instagram Over $400 Million

Innovation

This is the captioAnd this is the copyright

On Tuesday, Ireland’s privacy agency confirmed to Forbes that late last week it had issued a 405 million euro ($401 million) fine against Instagram over how it had allowed teens to inadvertently and publicly expose their personal email addresses and phone numbers. The fine was first reported by Politico.

In 2016, when Instagram introduced “business” profiles, it gave users access to new analytics tools to help them understand reach and engagement. Some users under 18 decided to convert their profiles to gain access to those tools, seemingly without realizing that by doing so they were making public their email addresses and phone numbers.

By early January 2019, David Stier, a California data scientist, happened upon this critical data exposure, and began to sound the alarm to Instagram and journalists. In June 2019, Stier filed a formal breach notification to Ireland’s Data Protection Commission, which led to this investigation.

In an emailed statement sent to Forbes, Sophie Vogel, a Meta spokesperson, said the company had taken several steps to mitigate further data leaks by minors.“This inquiry focused on old settings that we updated over a year ago, and we’ve since released many new features to help keep teens safe and their information private,” Vogel wrote.

Anyone under 18 automatically has their account set to private when they join Instagram, so only people they know can see what they post, and adults can’t message teens who don’t follow them.”

Nevertheless, Vogel also said Meta disagrees with “how the fine was calculated,” and added that the company intends to appeal. She did not respond to further questions asking her to elaborate on the company’s reasoning.

Stier told Forbes on Tuesday that the fine is insufficient given the gravity of the offense.

“They knowingly displayed children’s cell phone numbers and email in plain sight for months after they were notified of this,” he said. “The risks to children from Meta’s practices is incalculable; a fine of just 1% of their recent net income could be seen as a very small price to pay for putting millions of children in harm’s way.”

In 2021, Meta profited over $39.3 billion.

The DPC intends to release the full details of its decision next week.

California Raises Energy Alert—Warning Of Rolling Blackouts Due To Historic Heat Wave

Billionaires

Topline

California’s electrical grid operator issued an urgent warning asking residents to conserve energy Tuesday, raising its energy alert status to its highest level before moving to rolling blackouts as much of the state bakes in 100+ degree temperatures.

AFP via Getty Images

Key Facts

The California Independent System Operator issued a level two grid emergency Tuesday afternoon, which will be in effect from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Pacific time.

The alert urges conservation since “all available resources” for power generation are forecast to be in use during that time due to energy demand likely setting a new record.

Residents have been urged to raise their thermostats to 78 degrees or higher during peak demand, avoid using heavy appliances and refrain from charging electric vehicles.

Key Background

Tuesday is expected to be the peak of a heat wave that gripped the state over Labor Day weekend. Some cities experienced all-time record highs, including Bay Area cities Livermore and Fairfield, which both hit 116 degrees—the highest temperature ever recorded in the region. The Sacramento area could be next to set all-time records, with the mercury expected to soar near 115 degrees Tuesday afternoon. California’s power woes have been exacerbated by its recent transition to rely more heavily on solar power, which tapers off generating electricity in the evening, and an ongoing drought that is believed to be the state’s worst in 1,200 years. The drought has stymied the state’s ability to generate power through hydroelectric systems.

What To Watch For

Welcome relief could come by the end of the week as Hurricane Kay moves along the west coast of Mexico. The hurricane is expected to weaken into a tropical storm as it meanders off the coast of southern California and northwestern Mexico, but it will still push moisture into the southwestern U.S., bringing cooling rains to California. It is not expected to have significant impacts on the U.S. apart from bringing moisture.

Shares in Fosun International, the flagship of Shanghai billionaire Guo Guangchang, tumbled by 5.9% to a more than nine-year low in Hong Kong on Tuesday as the investment company lowered its stake in troubled global tourism unit Fosun Tourism, the owner of Club Med and other luxury travel brands.

Fosun Tourism’s Hong Kong-traded shares plunged 22% on Tuesday. Fosun International sold 28 million at a price of HK$8.57 per share to independent third parties on Sept. 5 after trading hours, Fosun Tourism said in a statement after the close of trade. Fosun International still holds about four-fifths of Fosun Tourism.

Fosun International shares closed at HK$5.10, their lowest since April 2013. Fosun Tourism closed at HK$8.00, a 19-month low; it went public at HK$15.60 a share in 2018.

Fosun Tourism, whose brands also include Atlantis and Thomas Cook, said last month it had started to recover from the worst of the impact on Covid-19 on its business. Revenue in the first half of the year more than doubled to 6.4 billion yuan, or $927 million, from 2.8 billion yuan a year earlier, and the total number of hotel guest bookings at group properties more than doubled to 597,000 from 264,000 in the first six months of 2021, notably helped by increased stays in the Americas and France.

However, stays in the company’s troubled home market in China plunged to only 48,000 guests from 115,000 a year earlier. China’s “zero-Covid” policies and selective travel restrictions have hurt travel and hotel businesses in the world’s No. 2 economy; GDP growth was only 0.4% in the second quarter from a year earlier.

Lockdowns are continuing this quarter ahead of the long Mid-Autumn Festival holiday in China this weekend. Some 65 million people in the country were locked down on Monday, according to a report by the Associated Press.

Fosun International last month said net profit in the first six months of the year dropped by nearly a third to 4.7 billion yuan. (See link here.)

Now that we’ve established Garmin’s expertise in the space, we’ve rounded up some of the best Garmin watches for women by scouring reviews from real shoppers, comparing specs and conducting our own exhaustive research. Read on for our suggestions, below.

Best Garmin Watch For Women Overall

Garmin Packs Every Last Feature Into This Watch

Garmin Fenix 6X Pro in black
Amazon

Garmin Fenix 6X Pro

Display Size: 1.4 inches | Weight: 3.38 ounces | Battery Life: Up to 21 days

From the get go, it’s rather obvious that, based on specs alone, the Garmin Fenix 6X Pro—an upgrade over the previous iteration, the 6S—is outstanding. No matter how you decide to use it—be it on a run, hike or walk—this watch relies on an array of global navigation systems (GPS, GLONASS and Galileo) to deliver the most accurate distance, elevation, speed and health data. And, if that weren’t enough, the advanced training features like PacePro pick up on your pace and offer training advice to get the most out of your workout. It has myriad different workouts to choose from and can advise on how to get the most out of your recovery time post-exercise too. As is the case with many other fitness watches, this one syncs to your phone and displays your texts, calls and other notifications on screen. And because this watch has a solar-powered option, you can even harness the power of the sun to keep your battery going much longer than other models.

Advanced health metrics include heart rate, pulse-ox, sleep monitoring and more. The watch has an “always-on” display as well, so it has the appearance of a regular timepiece with bezels in stainless steel, titanium or carbon, and you can use it to pay for goods and services with Garmin Pay. The watch even lets you store music with an optional subscription.

Pros:

  • Advanced mapping metrics for countless activities
  • Large display face
  • Always-on feature still delivers long-lasting battery

Cons:

  • Larger display means a heavier watch
  • It is the most expensive watch on our list

Best Lightweight Garmin Watch

You Just Might Forget It’s There

Garmin Vivosmart 4 in white with a rose gold bezel
Amazon

Garmin Vivosmart 4

Display Size: 0.75 Inches | Weight: 0.58 ounces | Battery Life: Up to 7 days

If you’re looking for something more minimal, this watch delivers. But don’t assume the slim profile means it’s not delivering on features. You can track your heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, sleep and stress levels with the Vivosmart 4, and it can also help reduce any anxiety with a built-in breathing timer. There’s also an array of activity profiles for different workouts like strength training or rowing, and it’s safe to wear while tracking laps in the pool. The notifications that pop up on your phone can be forwarded here, too—and Android owners can even reply to texts from the watch.

Tracking your mileage occurs when syncing to your phone’s GPS, but this watch can tell you when you should opt for a rest day instead after building a brief profile of your workouts.

Pros:

  • Slim profile can pass for a bracelet
  • Extremely lightweight
  • Affordable

Cons:

  • GPS is reliant on a phone connection

Best Garmin Watch For Music Lovers

The One With Built-In Spotify

Garmin Forerunner 245 in teal with a black bezel
Dick’s Sporting Goods

Garmin Forerunner 245

Display Size: 1.2 inches | Weight: 1.36 ounces | Battery Life: Up to 7 days

Like others here, this Garmin watch is equipped with the Women’s Health Tracking feature, but, if you’re keen, it also can put the app front and center with daily notifications to help you track the most important aspects of your personal health. However, what truly sets this timepiece apart is its dedication to music—it can store up to 500 songs after logging in to your Spotify, Deezer or Amazon music account.

So, the next time you want to jump into a workout free from distractions, with only your music and thoughts to guide you, this watch can stand as the only piece of tech that accompanies you out the door (along with Bluetooth headphones). Plus, Body Battery technology can let you know how hard you should workout or, conversely, if you should even exercise at all. Best of all, it backs up a full week’s worth of data, ensuring your hard work stays on record for time to come.

Pros:

  • Holds up to 500 songs so you can leave your phone at home
  • Highlights Women’s Health Tracking features

Cons:

  • Minimal battery life while playing music and using GPS
  • Looks very much like a standard fitness watch

Best Basic Garmin Smartwatch

A Pared-Down, Simplified Version

Forerunner 55 in white with a black bezel
Garmin

Garmin Forerunner 55

Display Size: 1.08 inches | Weight: 1.31 ounces | Battery Life: Up to 14 days

There are a few iterations of the Forerunner worth noting (it’s also worth noting that another Forerunner model also made this list), but the 55 stands as the no-frills option that delivers the basics you need from a fitness watch without overcomplicating things. The lack of over-the-top components means the battery life here is substantial, but you still get the health data you need along with some serious perks, like Garmin’s innovative predictor that lets you know if you’re peaking during any given workout or week. This model also puts the Women’s Health Tracking info front and center if you’d prefer, and it can track various workouts. Sadly, the display isn’t a touchscreen, but five easy-to-use buttons along the bezel allow you to toggle between menus, as well as workouts and stats.

And while you can’t store music, you can still expect your phone’s notifications to show up on the display. You’re also encouraged to view your previous workouts and health stats after you’ve had a chance to catch your breath.

Pros:

  • Built-in GPS
  • Five bezel buttons control the entire interface
  • Coaching feature suggests workouts, recovery options

Cons:

  • No touchscreen display
  • Menus can be difficult to navigate

Best Garmin For Battery Life

A Watch That Keeps Going And Going And Going

Garmin Instinct Solar in purple with a black display
Garmin

Garmin Instinct Solar

Display Size: 0.91 inches | Weight: 1.89 ounces | Battery Life: up to 54 days

If you’re the type of person who absolutely hates when your watch dies on you at the worst possible moment (like the second you happen to leave your house for a run), this is the watch for you. The Garmin Instinct Solar harnesses the power of the sun to keep the battery charged. As long as you’re directly exposing the screen to the sun, the watch has virtually unlimited battery. It’s also built to military-grade standards with materials like Gorilla glass for those of us (most of us, to be honest) who beat up on our devices. Under the hood, advanced mapping courtesy of GPS, GLONASS and Galileo helps guide the way and a built-in coach lets you know how your week is going before offering up a potential workout. Oh, and speaking of directions, this watch also uses Garmin’s proprietary TracBack feature that basically helps you find your way back after setting out from any given location.

The watch is equipped with all of the necessary sensors to track calories burned, mile splits and sleep habits. It also syncs with your phone to display your notifications at a glance or, if you’d prefer, the weather, calendar events and alerts.

Pros:

  • Extremely long battery life
  • Heavy-duty materials and design
  • Available in a wide range of colors

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • Bulky and heavier than other Garmin models

Best Discreet Garmin Fitness Watch

A Fitness Tracker That Doesn’t Look Like A Fitness Tracker

Garmin Vívomove 3
Garmin

Garmin Vívomove 3

Display Size: 0.72 inches | Weight: 1.63 ounces | Battery Life: Up to 5 days

This stylish hybrid combines the features of a fitness tracker with the looks of a traditional analog watch in a way that’s so convincing, no one will know you’re tracking your fitness stats until you start tapping on the screen. If you prefer, you can set it up to look like a regular timepiece that also displays a small, digital time on the face, or you can play with the settings to change up the colors and customize the face to suit your preferences. The watch face can also display your notifications as they come in, like your texts, as well as provide up-to-the-minute stats on your health and fitness. You can also pay for things at checkout counters with contactless payment, keep an eye on your stress levels, and more. This watch is also a champion of the Women’s Health Tracking application found on your phone, but you can do most of the logging and learning straight from your wrist. Plus, the watch can let you know how ready your body is for your next workout by creating a report from your most recent sweat sessions.

All of the workouts and exercises you could possibly adopt are likely already loaded here, and the built-in GPS makes capturing data a breeze. Plus, this watch takes an extra step towards keeping you safe by allowing you to share your live location to any of your contacts either manually or automatically when you begin an activity like an outdoor run, and the watch’s built-in Incident Detection feature can call for help if an injury should happen.

Pros:

  • Stylish, classic watch design
  • Features Women’s Health Tracking and live location

Cons:

  • Reviewers report app connectivity issues
  • Touchscreen is less responsive than other models

Best Display On A Garmin Watch

The One That’s Easy On The Eyes

Garmin Venu 2S in white with a bright, vibrant screen
Amazon

Garmin Venu 2S

Display Size: 1.1 inches | Weight: 1.35 ounces | Battery Life: Up to 10 days

You might compare the display size of the Venu 2S to the other Garmin watches on our list and wonder what makes this one special, especially for women. Average display size aside, the stunning graphics of this watch (thanks to AMOLED technology) make it the most aesthetically pleasing to look at—which just might convince you wear it and use it more often. Even the built-in workouts and breathing exercises are animated, adding a little flair to otherwise mundane functions.

This watch can store hundreds of songs and play directly from your streaming account too, and it can forward your phone’s notifications and calendar updates to your wrist where you’re encouraged to respond and interact. The watch keeps track of all the standard health and fitness metrics of its sibling devices, and interactive Women’s Health Tracking is available as well. All of these features might drain the battery more quickly than other smartwatches, but a rapid recharging option can quickly supply you with juice in a pinch.

Pros:

  • Beautifully detailed graphics
  • Touchscreen and bezel buttons deliver a refined user experience
  • Rapid charging option

Cons:

  • Shorter battery life when using all available features

What To Consider When Buying A Garmin Watch

Size

When it comes to watches, one size does not fit all. Instead, you should choose a timepiece that fits both your wrist and your personal style. Unlike, say, a pair of glasses, there’s no set rules that define the most appropriate size watch and for that reason, we’d like to offer some tips that will help you make the right choice.

While these aren’t hard and fast rules, one thing to consider is whether or not the watch is comfortable. Is it too tight or too loose? Does the band width feel too narrow or too bulky? If it doesn’t feel quite right, chances are you’re not going to wear it, and you’re out the money (and no closer to keeping tabs on your body). If you’re unable to test the watch out in person, it may help to determine your wrist size. Wrists that are 14 to 16 centimeters are considered very thin, 16 to 17 cm are slender, 17 to 18 are medium and anything above 18 is large. If your wrist is on the smaller side, try to avoid anything too bulky and opt for a slim band. On the other hand, if you have a larger wrist, go for something sportier (but don’t go crazy and pick the chunkiest thing on the market). The goal is to balance size with style.

Weight

A watch might appear small and lightweight, but that can change as soon as you put it on your wrist. As an avid fitness watch wearer, one of our editors chose to return one that felt heavy enough to fatigue her arm while she was running. Since she didn’t want to lift it to her line of vision time after time, it felt all but useless to her, so she exchanged it for a lighter model that didn’t literally weigh her wrist down.

Customizations

If you’re someone who likes to move the apps around on your phone or match your accessories to your outfit, the level of customization that your fitness watch allows could be a deal maker (or breaker). While some watches don’t allow you to choose which fitness features display most prominently, others will let you choose what and how you want these stats to display, which can make it feel more like the watch is working for you instead of the other way around. Many also offer face and band replacement options so you can switch out the colors to better suit your mood.

Features

A smartwatch, beyond helping you track your wellness goals like steps and hours of sleep, can help you stay on top of your digital life. It can share texts, phone calls, social media notifications, handle contactless payments, sync with various apps and more. But not all smartwatches are created equal. Some things to consider include: whether your watch is compatible with your smart phone; how long it lasts on a single charge; what fitness features it offers (and what apps it works with); whether or not it’s water resistant; if it shares notifications; if it continues to work when it’s away from your phone; whether it can answer incoming calls, emails or texts; whether it can be personalized.

Price

Generally speaking, most Garmin watches range between $100 and $400, depending on the features they include. Ultimately, wha you’re willing to spend comes down to what you hope to get out of your watch. If you’re looking for something stylish with a long battery life and access to myriad features, choose one of the pricier options. And if you’re looking for something that covers the basics, like telling time and tracking some (but not all) biometrics, consider investing in something simpler.

Frequently Asked Questions About Garmin Watches

What Is The Smallest Garmin Watch For Women?

As of this publishing, the smallest Garmin watch for women is the Garmin Forerunner 255 (released June 1, 2022). At just 41 millimeters in diameter, it’s fairly close to the size of a traditional women’s watch, however, it contains many of the same fitness and health tracking tools of its larger peers. If you’re looking for something lightweight and simple, this is it.

Is A Garmin Watch Worth Buying?

Short answer: yes. Garmin designs some of the best sports watches and fitness trackers on the market. That being said, there are various options to consider from Garmin and other brands, and we’d recommend making a point to test multiple options before investing in one.

Can You Text On A Garmin Watch?

Another short answer: not really. With the exception of the Garmin Menu 2 Plus (which comes with a built-in speaker and microphone), none of Garmin’s watches feature the ability to text or respond to messages directly from the watch itself.

Is Apple Or Garmin Better?

We get it—you’re in the market for a new smartwatch and you want the best option money can buy. But when the time comes to choose between Apple and Garmin, remember that it all depends on what watch better meets your needs. Garmin watches, generally speaking, are designed for those looking to track sports and fitness metrics. The Apple watch, on the other hand, may be more limited in terms of fitness offerings, but if you already have other Apple products, it syncs seamlessly with the iOS ecosystem.

Do All Garmin Watches Have The Women’s Health Tracking Application?

Unfortunately, no. If you’re a woman who wants to get even more insight into her health, fitness and general wellness from a smart watch, we highly recommend choosing a Garmin watch that has this feature. Some of our favorites include the Vívomove 3, Venu 2S and Forerunner 55.

What Makes Garmin’s GPS Superior To Other Fitness Watches?

Many of the higher-end models made by Garmin use a combination of three different global navigation systems, so that you can be sure you’re always in full control over where you’re headed. These watches harness the power of traditional GPS, GLONASS (a Russian satellite navigation system) and Galileo (a global navigation system launched by the European Union), so that no matter where in the world you are, your watch can guide the way.
